This website is dedicated to the officers and men of the 19th Maine Infantry and their service during the American Civil War. The unit was mustered into service on August 25, 1862 at Bath, Maine, as part of President Abraham Lincoln's call for 300,000 volunteers. The 19th participated in a number of campaigns throughout the remainder of the war and was discharged on June 7, 1865.
Throughout this site and on many of the links special emphasis is given to Company "F", to Private James W. Powers, (my wife's great-grandfather) and to several other men from Litchfield, ME (my adopted hometown).
Following the Civil War Corporal John Day Smith was urged by his former comrades to write a history of the unit. This excellent history forms the basis for much of the information on this website. You can read or download a free searchable copy of this book HERE.
