The 19th Maine left Bath, Maine by railcar on 27 August, 1862 and arrived in Washington, DC on 29 August. Initially assigned to the defense of Washington the 19th did not participate in any significant engagements during 1862. Their first glimpse at the realities of war occurred on 30 August when they were ordered to march to Arlington Heights and encountered General Pope's troops fleeing from the second battle of Bull Run.
