Isaac Warren Starbird was born in Litchfield, ME on 10 JUL 1839 and was educated at the Litchfield Liberal Institute and Bowdoin College where he graduated in August, 1862. On 25 AUG 1862 he was mustered into Company F of the 19th Maine Volunteer Infantry as a CAPT. He served with the 19th at Fredericksburg, Chancellorsville and Gettysburg (where he was wounded) and several other engagements. In April 1864 he was assigned to Motts Brigade, 4th Division, 2nd Corps and served there during the Wilderness campaign, Spotsylvania, Cold Harbor and Petersburg. In August 1864 he was promoted to Major and assumed command of the 19th Maine and led the regiment during the battle of Weldon RR, the final assault on Petersburg and the pursuit of Lee. He was promoted to LT Colonel and Colonel. At the battle High Bridge he was severely wounded and fell from his horse unconscious. For his gallantry during this engagement he was commissioned a Brevet Brigadier General. After the war he served with the custom service, studied medicine, received his medical degree from Dartmouth College and practiced medicine in Maine and Boston. In 1895 he accepted the position of surgeon of the Soldiers’ Home in Massachusetts. He died on February 2nd, 1907 in Boston and is buried in the Forest Hills Cemetery, Jamaica Plain, MA
